One great thing about the muse classes is the peer mentors. Having a peer mentor is a new experience to me and I really like having one. My peer mentor Anna has been a huge help this year. Between making it clear what we are being asked to do on certain assignments and correcting the syllabus with things like due date, she has saved me many times already. What I like the most about the peer mentors is how they work on two levels; they work along side the professor so they have a solid understanding of the course and the assignments and everything, but they are also a student just like us so they can see things from our perspective and act as a liaison between us and the professor making everything alot more transparent.

The 'Know Yourself' in Chapter 5 dealt with critical thinking styles. We used a self assessment involving various questions and ranking them based on how how much they described us. While I didn't have a single dominant style I had a strong preference for the strategist style which makes sense as I like to plan things out. The style scored the lowest in was the consumer style with the information avoider style falling in between.

One part of the 'Know Yourself' section of chapter 4 had a self assessment aimed at determining ones Sensory Preference, or whether they learn best by seeing, hearing, or doing something. Surprisingly my highest preference was visual with auditory second, the opposite of what I expected. This is because I really like music and also I'm good at remembering things people say rather than visual details about them. Also when it comes to music I can read sheet music but find it easier to just listen to something rather than seeing it. This was a surprising discovery.

The journal section of chapter 9 had a part about reflecting on a bad speech I heard. The only only speech I can think of that I heard and though was bad was the speech by Megan Baker at orientation. I don't remember what the speech was about or what specifically was bad about it, but I remember thinking that for being the ASB President or whatever she is, she didn't seem to have that great of communication skills, at least as far as giving speeches. I guess the fact that I don't remember what it was about is another sign it wasn't good because I would have remembered the point of a good speech.

The 'Know Yourself' assignment in chapter 9 of my guide to college success had me fill out a chart involving how I do in certain aspects of writing assignments. The results were nothing new to me as after I wrote the paper which was used to fill in the chart it was really clear what my weaknesses were. Basically while I have good grammar and diction, and I have a clear idea of what it is I want to say and what I'm being asked, when it comes to actually writing it out I have trouble when it comes to organizing and structuring my paper so it's clear. My professor talked to me and said what I should do is write down my main points as I'm thinking of what to write instead of just thinking about it in my head so that I actually see it on paper and that might help me see how to structure everything.

Chapter 3 of my guide to college success talked again about time management. This time what I noticed was something I had already begun to realize as a problem in my like, and that's procrastination. I've been really putting off work and at the end rushing through and doing a mediocre job. For example every Thursday my calc homework is do and I had been doing it all durring the two hour break I have before class on thursdays which means I have to really rush. Last week however my teacher decided instead to give us a pop quiz. Because I had just been rushing through the homework I hadn't really learned the material as much as I should so now I've been doing my homework every day so I'm prepared for next weeks midterm.

So I got the Sixth Edition of Your Guide to College Success, and as I suspected it's completely different than my old book, the 4th edition. I reread chapter 2, which in the newer version talked about relationships. It talked about alot of things I'd never thought of before like having your verbal and non verbal communication be consistent with each other. There were alot of things about non verbal communication I never really paid attention to before like what my body language conveys to other people, so I'm definitely going to pay more attention.

I read the second chapter of the book Your Guide to College Success ( I have the old edition so I think I'm going to have to do a lot of reading when I get the newer edition since I think the topics covered are different) and it talked about time management. I definitely need to work on time management. I've been late to class alot, mostly the first class of the day. This is because of how I've been planning out what time to leave. My house is down the street from both my elementary school, my middle school, and my high school is one street away, so I've always been really relaxed about what time I leave since they're all so close. Now that I have a 20 minute commute, I've been giving myself almost no time to get to class, so I'm now starting to leave 40-50 minutes ahead of when I need to be in class.

We went to the MLK library today. I'd seen the outside and I knew it was big, but the exterior doesn't quite do it justice. The library is huge! I've never been inside before so was a little shocked to see all the floors, I think it has 8 in total. I also learned alot about not just the physical building but the digital infastructure set up with things like databases and a thing where yoju can request books that sjsu doesnt have and theyll send them from another school like csu longbeach. Im deffinitely going to spend more time here.

Alright so I guess I learned my lesson. Last year I took AP calculus so this year I'm starting in calc 2 aka 31. The material were currently being taught is stuff that I already learned, so I decided I didn't need to go to class. After not going for 3 days I realized I still had to turn in the homework and that since I hadn't gone I hadn't gotten the assigned problems from the book and because I don't know anyone in the class yet I had to go ask the professor. Embarrassing.

College has presented many changes for me so far. The fact that I was able to pick the classes I wanted at the times I wanted was a big change compared to previously just having a councilor pick the classes and which teacher I got.
